Women who are breastfeeding, pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant should talk with a doctor before starting Adipex. Also, be sure to tell a doctor about any other medications--prescription or over-the-counter--currently being taking. This includes herbal preparations and vitamins.
Does Adipex Interact with Food, Drink or Any Other Medications?
If taking any of the following types of medications, talk with a doctor before taking Adipex:
- Certain antidepressant medications called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) should not be taken within 14 days of taking Adipex. Examples of MAOIs include: phenelzine, known as Nardil; tranylcyporomine, known as Parnate; and isocarboxazid, known as Marplan.
- Tricyclic antidepressants, such as Elavil, Asendin, Sinequan, Pamelor, Tofranil, Anafranil, Vivactil and Norpramin, can strengthen the effect of Adipex. Be sure to talk to a doctor first if taking any of those medications.
- Adipex may require changes in insulin or other diabetes drug therapies in order to maintain a healthy blood glucose level.
If taking Ismelin, also known as guanethidine, for high blood pressure, talk to a doctor before starting Adipex, because Adipex can decrease the effectiveness of Ismelin.
There are no foods or drinks that are known to interact with Adipex, but still take Adipex on an empty stomach to get the most benefit.
Any time a person takes medication, s/he should do so with caution, and only as directed by a doctor. People who have never taken Adipex before--or if it's been a long time since Adipex has been taken--might have an allergic reaction. If having trouble breathing, feeling as though the throat is closing up, experiencing swelling of the lips, tongue or face or having hives, stop taking Adipex right away and seek emergency medical attention.
Adipex is habit-forming. Therefore, it should only be taken as prescribed by a doctor for a short time, about 3 to 6 weeks. Try to avoid stopping Adipex suddenly.
Use caution when operating machinery or motor vehicles, as Adipex can make a person drowsy. Drinking alcohol can make both drowsiness and dizziness worse.
And remember...Adipex is most effective when used as part of a weight loss program that also includes healthy eating and regular exercise.
